Effects of gemfibrozil on insulin sensitivity and on haemostatic variables in hypertriglyceridemic patients.

2000

In order to assess the efficacy of gemfibrozil on lipid and haemostatic parameters in patients with plurimetabolic syndrome, a multicenter double-blind placebo controlled, parallel study was carried out in 56 patients with primary hypertriglyceridemia and glucose intolerance. These patients had elevated PAI activity and antigen and t-PA antigen levels at rest and after venous occlusion. Gemfibrozil reduced plasma triglyceride levels (P0.001), whereas it increased free fatty acids (P0.05) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (P0.05). In those patients reaching normalization of plasma triglyceride levels (triglyceride reductionor =50%) (n=15), insulin levels (P0.05) as well as the …

Examining Quality of Life After Treatment with Azelaic and Pyruvic Acid Peels in Women with Acne Vulgaris

2020

Purpose This randomized parallel study aims to investigate the azelaic acid (AA), and pyruvic acid (PA) peels treatment effect on health-related quality of life (QOL) in young adult women with acne vulgaris. Patients and Methods The participants were 120 female undergraduate students, with mild to moderate facial acne and an average age of 22 years old (M = 22.2, SD = 16.1). Eligibility criteria were as follows: female gender, 18-25 years of age, no dermatological treatment within the last 12 months and mild to moderate papulopustular acne. Patients were randomly divided into two groups, the first group was treated with AA, and the second group was treated with PA. Both groups received trea…

A randomized, double-blind comparison of a rapidly escalating dose of venlafaxine and imipramine in inpatients with major depression and melancholia.

1996

A double-blind, randomized, parallel study in 167 hospitalized patients with major depression and melancholia was conducted to determine if rapidly escalated doses of venlafaxine produced an earlier response, compared with rapidly escalated doses of imipramine. The daily dose of venlafaxine was rapidly increased to 375 mg/day over a five-day period, was maintained at this level for 10 days, and then was reduced to 150 mg/day for the remainder of the study. The imipramine dose was rapidly increased to 200 mg/day over five days and was maintained at this level to the end of the study. The primary efficacy variables were time to response and time to sustained response on the HAM-D and MADRS. N…

Untersuchungen zur biologischen Aktivität der Phenylborsäure

1961

After 10 applications of phenylboric acid (0.03 ml of a 2·10−3 M solution) to young plants ofKalanchoe blossfeldiana the flowers were found to have a reduced number of petals or no petals at all. InCucumis sativus one application of phenylboric acid at the same strength was enough to cause abnormal flowers to develop in the axils of 8 to 10 leaves; in addition there were 1 to 2 leafles nodes and other abnormalities. The position of the abnormal flowers and leafless nodes was dependant upon the stage of development of the plant at the time of application. It seems from a parallel study of treated plants grown to maturity, and plants sectioned at the time of treatment, that phenylboric acidin…

In vivo ozone exposure does not increase DNA single-strand breaks in human peripheral lymphocytes

2013

In this randomized parallel study, we examined whether an acute ozone (O3) exposure leads to increased DNA strand breaks in human lymphocytes. The groups were exposed to 0.21 ppm O3 or filtered air for two hours. 30min and 4.5 h after exposure, DNA damage was determined in isolated lymphocytes using the Fast Micromethod. There was no detectable effect after O3 exposure. We conclude that an acute O3 exposure at the tested concentration does not lead to persistent DNA damage.
